LHS Chemistry teacher James Cormier is the instructor for this chemistry course titled CHEM 1000 which focuses on chemistry in a changing world.

Students are required to have taken one year of chemistry, have a 3.0 GPA, and the course is only offered to juniors and seniors.

The course grants them 3 general education college credits to any state university.

This course takes place in S202 on Mondays and Thursdays from 3PM to 5PM for 15 weeks.

Cormier was interested in teaching this class to help students learn how chemistry is used in the real world and to dig deeper into the topic than just the basics in the classroom.

Cormier contacted Dr. Canney from Fitchburg State to set it up. A grant from Fitchburg State also covers the cost of the books that students will be using in class.

The course “will ensure students to get new opportunities,” said Cormier. He wants this program to encourage students to think more  about college.

The class will follow the high school’s schedule for vacation, so students will have their expected time off, and not have to follow Fitchburg State’s schedule.

The course is conveniently located at LHS for transportation     purposes and also meets after school so that CTEi students in shop still have the opportunity to take this class if they are so interested.

This course will include two field trips to Fitchburg State to partake in two labs to get a more accurate feel of the college experience.

Cormier plans to teach dual enrollment Biology in the summer to create more opportunities like this for students.
