Gay Straight Alliance to Host Day of Silence

The National Day of Silence on April 12th 2019, is a student-led national event where people take a vow of silence to represent the silencing of those in the LGBTQ+ community.

The Day of Silence highlights how the intimidation, name calling, and bullying has a silencing effect on students. Some students will stay silent to represent both those who have been signaled out and those who cannot come out and say how they feel inside due to discrimination from families and society.

LHS Sophomore Alexia Perez Lucas said “For the past 5 years that I’ve participated, I’ve noticed a huge amount of people who I wouldn’t have thought would participate in the Day of Silence. I always encourage people who are heterosexual to join.”

If you decide to participate, it’s important to know that you do have the right to remain silent between classes and before and after school. On the other hand, you do not have the right to ignore your teachers’ requests during instructional time. If a teacher asks for you to speak during class, do it.

At the end of the day, students will be allowed to attend a breaking the silence ceremony to let everything they experienced throughout the day out. Those who stayed silent will have the chance to express how they feel and share who they really are.

If you are interested in supporting those who don’t have a voice in the LGBTQ+ community, sign-up for the Day of Silence in room S106.
