Editor’s Note: This is one of a series of stories investigating subjects of interest to the students of LHS. Have an idea for a story? Let us know.
The Mayor’s Youth Council was formed in 2019 by Leominster’s Mayor Dean Mazzarella.
Many different students from Leominster schools were selected to participate.
The council is a way for students to meet with school and city officials to try and make the city a better place.
“The Mayor’s Youth Council is an amazing opportunity for young individuals to work with the Mayor and other city officials to give back to the community,” LHS senior Marielle Howlett said. “Between raising funds for community members struggling or even planning events like princess meet and greets, it’s a great way for young community members to get involved.”
The council meets about once a month to plan various events and fundraisers.
Some examples of things they have done are a cookout for the homeless, a fundraiser for autism awareness, a toy drive, dressing up for the winter stroll and so many more community service projects.
At each meeting the students meet with the Mayor, LHS Principal Dr. Josh Romano, the LHS school resource officers, various city hall officials, and many more.
The council is helping out the community, but it is also helping the students who are a part of it.
“Every student has an important role. We not only get the chance to make a change in the community, but work with some of the leaders in our school,” LHS Junior Darranise Hunter said.
The council being formed opened up a lot of opportunities for students and has really made an impact on the community.
“It’s definitely a good program and I wish more people knew about it,” LHS Junior Maggie Leighton said.
