After years of waiting, Leominster is finally building a track for the LHS Track and Field teams behind Leominster Hugh School.
The new track will have a modern surface, lights for evening events, and areas for different track activities. This project will help with fitness, unite the community, and host competitions.
The first high school in Leominster, the former Carter Building, was built in 1904 and served the community for many years. The second high school building, the current Leominster High School, was constructed in 1977 to accommodate the growing student population and has been expanded twice since then.
Neither building had a track, which highlights the recent excitement in the community about the new track being built with modern facilities for athletes and competitions.
According to LHS Athletic Director Dave Palazzi, this new track will provide a great space for fitness and a fantastic venue for school events, local competitions, and community gatherings. It will feature bleachers that offer plenty of seating for spectators, making it easier for family and friends to come and support the athletes. There will also be bathrooms, which are convenient for everyone attending events. They’re adding an outdoor barn to store all the equipment, keeping everything organized and easily accessible for practices and competitions.
“We’re excited to open our first track,” said Palazzi. “This is a big step for our school and shows our commitment to supporting our athletes. Let’s make the most of this new facility and achieve great things together.”
It’s really exciting for our school to finally have a track. Before this, our indoor athletes had to run in the halls during the indoor season, and outdoor athletes had to use Doyle Field. Now, with the new track, things will be much better. Plus, there are plans to improve Doyle Field in the future once the track is built. This is a big step for our school and our athletes.
The bids on the construction recently came back in and construction could begin this Spring.
