Leominster High School just had a Library Card drive for the Leominster Public Library, and a lot of students made a library card.
LHS Librarian James Freel said “It’s at last our 5th annual library card drive. We have close to 50 sign-ups every year.”
The importance of having a library card is many Freel said.
“The Library has Nintendo, manga, and video games you can take out,” he said. “There’s a lot you can do with (a library card).
The library offers community events as well, such as movie nights and book clubs.
A library card allows you to borrow any books, video games, and consoles from the library. But, you can’t borrow a book and other items available in the library without a library card.
Anyone can get a library card, and everyone is eligible for a physical library card or an eCard.
Leominster Public Library Librarian Sabrina Bonetti said “Anyone can have a library card.”
If you missed the library card drive and still want to get yours, there are four steps to get a library card:
- Step 1: Find the Leominster Public Library.
- Step 2: Bring Your School I.D. and Proof of Address.
- Step 3: Fill out the application handed to you by the staff.
- Step 4: Enjoy!
Sixty-eight percent of Americans have a library card, up 5 percent since 2006. Survey results indicate that this is the greatest number of Americans with library cards since the American Library Association (ALA) started to measure library card usage in 1990.
Freel said the number of students signing up for the library cards continues to grow.
“It’s very successful. We had even more this year (sign up), nearly 60.
Every year, Leominster High School holds a library card drive on the Friday before Columbus Day, but this year it was in November.
Freel hopes to increase student access even more.
“I look forward to it for next year,” said Freel. “In the future it would be great for this (Leominster High) to be a CW Mars hub.”
That would allow students to reserve items right from LHS.
This holiday break the Public Library is hosting several craft events and an art exhibit featuring the artwork of Robert Dewsnap. For information about the public library hours over break, check out their website at www.leominsterlibrary.org.
