Indoor Track is a sport that consists of many different events, such as 55-meter dash, 55-meter hurdles, 300 meters, 600 meters, 1000 meters, 1 mile, 2 miles, shotput, high jump, 4×2 or 4×200 relay, 4×4 or 4×400 relay, 4×8 or 4×800 relay, and shotput.
The relays consist of four runners, running a specific amount of meters, running while carrying a baton in their hand and passing it to one another.
I have interviewed nine track athletes, asking how much they like it so far, what’s their favorite event, and finally, if they would like, to share their “PR” or personal record of the events that they participate in.
The first athlete we will get to learn about is LHS Freshman Jaila Bergeron, with a personal record of 4 minutes and 3 seconds for the 1000 meters, and a personal record of two minutes and 20 seconds for the 600 meters.
Her favorite event is the 1000 meters in indoor track.
“So I liked the 1000, I don’t know I just like that one,” said Jaila. “Wait, I like it because it doesn’t take super long, but it’s also not super short.”
I also asked how track was going for her.
“I like it, but I don’t really like running in the hallways because the air quality is really bad,” said Jaila.
Another athlete we will get to learn about is LHS Junior Priscilla Giglio, with a personal record of 7.72 seconds for the 55-meter dash. As a result of this, she was able to make it to State Divisionals.
“My favorite event is probably the 4×200 meter relay, which is when four girls run 200 meters around the track,” said Priscilla. “I like it because the distance isn’t too far, but it’s also not too short.”
“It’s like the perfect mid-distance that you still sprint the whole thing and it’s really exciting not only to run, but to watch because something is always happening and I really like that,” said Priscilla.
She goes in-depth about how her track season has gone so far.
“I’ve really been enjoying the mid-track season so far. It’s been a great experience pushing myself and seeing my progress,” she said.
“I’ve made some personal bests and I really appreciate the support from my teammates and coaches, and overall it’s been a rewarding season,” said Priscilla.
LHS Sophomore Seth Thomas did the shotput, as well as the 300 meters.
“It was good,” said Seth, describing how the indoor track season went for him. He also rated the sport of indoor track, “giving it a solid eight.”
The next indoor track athlete that was interviewed, was LHS Senior Frankie Tidmore, with a personal record of 7.9 seconds for the 55-meter dash, a personal record of 10.1 for the 55-meter hurdles, and a personal record of approximately 50.0 seconds for the 300 meters.
Her favorite event is the four by 200 relay.
Of the current season Frankie said, “So far it’s pretty good and coach is a little more demanding this year, though.”
Another indoor track athlete, LHS Sophomore Magdalene Quansah had a personal record of 9.0 seconds for the 55-meter dash.
Her favorite event is the 55-meter dash. “My favorite event is the 55 meter, because it’s quick, it’s fast,” said Magdalene.
“Track is really good,” she added. “I like it so far, the warmups are more, but I have had more experience and more fun with indoor track than outdoor. Coach is more strict now, but we still try our best and I think it’s really good.”
“Me personally, I prefer indoor track more than outdoor,” said Magdalene, describing how her track season had gone so far.
LHS Junior William Wilson had a personal record of 54 seconds for the 400 meters and a personal record of 38 seconds for the 300 meters.
He doesn’t have a favorite event but contributes to a lot of events.
“I run the 400 meters right now, which is on an indoor track, it’s two laps around, but I’m a multi, so I can do really any event distance, sprinting, jumps, throws, anything that needs to be done.”
“I have done it since freshman year,” William continued. “I really enjoy it. I think it’s a lot of work ethic. But yeah, I mean, it’s a large part of my life,” said William, explaining how much he enjoyed the sport.
LHS Senior Shade Yusuf had a personal record of either 23.7 or 23.8 inches for Shotput.
Her favorite event is the shotput.
“So far indoor track, it’s like a 50/50, you know? Yeah it’s fun, but then, at the same time, sometimes it’s not as fun as I feel like it should be,” said Shade.
LHS Junior Arianah Kasenge had a personal record of 8.9 seconds for the 55-meter dash for her first race, and 8.4 seconds for the second race.
Her favorite event is the 55-meter dash. “
“Oh, definitely the 55 because it’s short,” said Ariana. “But I also like the four by two because I’m doing it with other people, so then it makes me like less nervous, you know, so we’re doing it like a team thing.”
“I think it’s a bit fun,” she added. “Sometimes it’s tiring because we do a lot, but it really helps at the end. Like, it makes you fit and wanna work out more,” said Arianah, as she described the sport.
Last but most certainly not least, we have LHS Junior Nana Agyei. She did the 55-meter dash.
“It was really fun, tiring, but like just something to do after school. So I only ran the 55, but like now after doing outdoor and doing hurdles, if I were to run it this year I would run the 55 hurdles, just ’cause it’s fun,” said Nana, describing how the indoor track season had gone for her.
