Freshman Look Back at Year 1

Abigail Byrom and Keira Gualtieri

Every year Leominster High School (LHS) welcomes hundreds of new and diverse students into their freshman year of high school.

To end their freshman year, we decided to interview a few students to see how they felt about spending their first year of high school at Leominster High.

We asked the same 5 questions to these students, including what they did and didn’t like about LHS, what the hardest thing to adapt to during the move from middle school to high school was their overall rate of their freshman year, and one question they would like to ask their senior self.

To start, we interviewed Ryan Castillo, age 15.

LHS Freshman Ryan Castillo (Abigail Byrom and Keira Gualtieri)

When asked what he liked most about Leominster High School, he said that the freshman exploratory system was something he really liked.

He said it allowed everyone interested to explore the different shops offered so they could choose what they wanted to pursue. His least favorite thing about the High School was their no-hat rule.

Ryan´s hardest thing to adapt to when moving from middle school to high school was the focus he had to put into his schoolwork.

He said that time management was a big struggle for him and staying on top of his tasks was difficult.

One question Ryan would like to ask his senior self is, ¨What was your most embarrassing moment during your time at LHS?¨

He would rate his freshman year an 8.5 out of 10.

LHS Freshman Samuel Ward ( Abigail Byrom and Keira Gualtieri)

Next up is Samuel J. Ward, age 15, a varsity tennis player.

When asked what he liked most about Leominster High School, he said that he likes how connected he is to his friends, and how he can participate in a competitive sport. Sam’s least favorite part is that he feels as though some of his classes aren’t giving him enough valuable learning experiences, and he feels that he hasn’t learned very much this year.

He also wished more classes were offered.

The hardest thing for him to adapt to was the number of choices he could make to further his educational career.

One question Sam had for his senior self was, “What career path am I leaning towards?”

He would give his freshman year an 8 out of 10.

Reece Soulliere, age 15.

LHS Freshman Reece Soulliere ( Abigail Byrom and Keira Gualtieri)

Reece´s favorite thing about Leominster High School was how the school has a very strong and supportive community.

She doesn’t like how only one person is allowed out to use the bathroom.

The hardest thing for Reece to adapt to was the bigger school and more people in the school.

The question she has for her senior self is, “Am I sticking to my plans?”

Reece would give her freshman year an 8.5/10.

Camilla Correa, age 15,  JV lacrosse player.

LHS Freshman Camilla Correa (Abigail Byrom and Keira Gualtieri)

Camilla likes the opportunities LHS provides and the variety of extracurriculars offered.

Her least favorite part of LHS is all the quizzes she has to take.

The hardest thing for her to adapt to is the amount of responsibility she has and how students have to choose their courses carefully so they don’t make a choice they regret later on.

Her question for her senior self is, “How many straight A’s have I been able to get?”

She gave her freshman year an 8/10.

Mia Torres, age 15, marching and concert band member.

LHS Freshman Mia Torres (Abigail Byrom and Keira Gualtieri)

Mia’s favorite thing about LHS is is its diversity, its strong community, and all of the opportunities offered to students.

Her least favorite part of the school is the C wing.

The hardest thing for Mia to adapt to when she moved from middle school to high school was the schedule transition, although she found people in the hallways to be very kind and helpful when she didn’t know where to go.

Mia’s question to her senior self is, “Did you make it the 4 best years you’re going to remember when you’re old and saying ‘back in my day?”

She would give her freshman year a 4/10.
