January 9th marked a significant day in Leominster Highschool sports history, and some may say even for the whole state of Massachusetts.
LHS Senior and star quarterback Osiris Lopez, one of the greatest athletes to come out of Leominster has just played his last high school sport game for Leominster High as he completed his final basketball game before heading to early admission at Coastal Carolina.
After this game, he plans on taking his talent down to South Carolina where he is hoping to play quarterback for Coastal Carolina.
The Blue Devils lost the basketball game 31-26 against Wachusett, but as always, Lopez didn’t give up until the buzzer went off.
For Lopez, this game was very emotional for him as he wanted to make sure he soaked it all in.
After the game, Lopez said “Man, I can’t believe it’s over. I love this town and I’m going to miss playing in front of all my friends and family.”
Most of Osiris’s football coaches were in attendance as well, showing respect and appreciation for his hard work.
Lopez also mentioned “I’m glad I made the decision to play basketball again, even if it was only for a few games.”
Before the season started, Lopez wasn’t planning on playing since he knew he would have missed most of the season. Him deciding to play again shows his true passion and love for both Leominster and sports in general.
Teammate and LHS Senior Alden Halstead said “It’s (been) nice to have him back. He’s a true competitor and great leader on the court.”
Lopez is leaving Leominster after one of the most successful football seasons in Massachusetts history after breaking the high school career touchdown record for Central Mass with 123 touchdowns.
The city of Leominster is grateful for the success Osiris helped bring to both football and basketball and he will certainly go down in history for Leominster.
