EDITOR’S NOTE: For security reasons we have agreed to allow the FBI agent’s name and image to be hidden.
Students at Leominster High School gained firsthand insight into the world of federal law enforcement when an FBI agent visited as part of the continuing Criminal Justice Speaker Series.
The event was organized by Criminal Justice teacher Rene Lafeyette, who created the speaker series to give students real world exposure to careers in the industry.
The agent, who asked to remain anonymous, works out of the FBI’s Worcester field office and spoke to students in the Criminal Justice and Street/Practical Law classes. The agent touched upon the experience of working on investigations ranging from cybercrime to counterterrorism.
The agent described the training process at the FBI Academy in Quantico, the teamwork necessary for complex operations, and the personal motivation behind pursuing a career in public service.
The agent also clarified misconceptions about the difference between the FBI and the CIA, and worked towards removing some of the barrier between the public and agents stating, “The FBI and the people in it are normal people in the community.”
Students engaged enthusiastically during a Q&A session, asking about college pathways, specialized roles within the FBI, and the challenges that come with applying to join the FBI.
The Criminal Justice Speaker Series will continue next with a presentation from an officer with the State Police.
