It’s no secret that the parking at LHS is a serious problem that needs to be addressed. It is very clear that the parking here at LHS is simply not fit to accommodate the number of students that actually have licenses. I spoke with 2 of our deans here at LHS, David Bachant and Steven McCaughey, and heard their stances on the future of parking as well as the current state of the parking.
McCaughey was aware that parking is a serious issue, and there is not enough parking for all students. He said that it is difficult to make it so that everyone can park on campus.
He believed that the biggest issue is the unwillingness of students to park legally on Kingman Drive, and to walk about 200 yards to the main entrance. He said that he has been told by at least a handful of students, “I’m not doing that, I’m not parking down there and walking.”
Another issue he also addressed was that many students drive and park at LHS without licenses and parking permits/stickers.
He described that he is currently only focused on the kids who are parked illegally rather than
people who are parked in the teacher’s lot which was previously a serious issue.
He said, “All I’m doing is putting stickers on people who are parked in illegal spots. I’m not even worrying about the teachers’ lot. Kids can park in the teacher’s lot once it’s past 7:30. As far as I’m concerned, teachers should be here before then, so if work study kids come late and can only find a spot to park in the teachers’ lot, fine.”
Bachant explained that he is less than impressed by the parking situation and believes that it very much needs to be addressed. Bachant wished that students could apply for assigned parking and that Seniors could have first pick, then Juniors, and then Sophomores. Then , if admin catches you in someone else’s spot, then they’re towing your vehicle.
Bachant also said parking needs to improve in the barn lot.
He said that once the track field is complete behind the school and construction is done, there will be at least 150 parking spots along the backside of the school. The hope is that staff will be able to utilize those parking spots, and that will open up the teacher’s lot for students to be able to park.
Bachant said that it is best that the teachers park in the back since students are required to utilize the main entrance and the main entrance only, unless the student arrived by bus.
Moving teacher parking to the back will really help alleviate all of the tetris and illegal parking.
There are between 160 and 180 staff members at LHS, so nearly all of the staff members should be able to fit in the back of the building with the potential for a small amount of overflow.
Bachant is also aware that some sophomore students are driving and that this is something that needs to be dealt with.
As of 2026 there are only about 143 spots available, excluding the barn lot, that students are actually allowed to utilize. That’s only about 14.4% of the school’s entire population that is able to park. That doesn’t even take into account the actual kids who drive daily.
The track should be completed by the start of next year.
