The Chess Club at Leominster High School has quickly become one of the most active and intellectually engaging groups on campus. Every week, students of all skill levels gather to test their strategies, sharpen their minds, and enjoy the timeless game of chess in a friendly, competitive atmosphere.
Led by LHS English Teacher Neil DiFrancesca, the Chess Club meets every Thursday in room D258. Whether you’re a seasoned player who can calculate five moves ahead or a curious beginner learning how the knight moves, the club welcomes everyone with open arms—and open boards.
LHS Senior Nico Newell said he enjoys the challenge of chess.
“Logical thinkers are usually the most fun to play against,” said Nico.
LHS Senior Raul Alcoforado added that Chess Club was a “very fun club. Mr. DiFrancesca is a fun person to be with. Overall, the club is very fun.”
Looking ahead, the club plans to host a school-wide chess tournament this Spring, inviting students from across the school to participate. With growing membership and a calendar full of events, the Chess Club continues to prove that strategy and sportsmanship go hand in hand.
So, whether you’re chasing checkmates or just curious about the game, consider joining the Chess Club. You might just find that the best move is to get involved!
